Seneca High School National Honor Society (Service Organization)

Seneca National Honor Society

Seneca's National Honor Society is a service-based organization whose members are chosen based on the qualities of scholarship, leadership, character, and service.  Once inducted into NHS, members participate in a variety of projects, such as the tutoring program, the blood drive, volunteering at local non-profits, Pancakes for Pets, Shine for Shriners and Corn Hole for a cause.  National Honor Society members must maintain a %92 or higher GPA while participating in required NHS events and 25 hour service requirements.

Eligibility

Students in the sophomore, junior or senior class who have attended Seneca for at least one semester who show strength in the following categories and receive a majority vote by the five member faculty council will be inducted into the chapter.  The faculty council will review verifiable information on each candidate through the application process and both faculty members and outside individuals (non family members) with knowledge of the candidates.

Four Pillars:

Academics:

To be eligible, a student must be in the sophomore class or above and must have a 92% cumulative G.P.A. or higher. Students who are eligible are notified in September of each school year and are invited to begin the application process.  Incidents of Academic dishonesty may inhibit acceptance and NHS members found participating in academic dishonesty will be brought in front of the faculty council with possible dismissal.

Leadership:
Students must show positive leadership skills either in or out of the classroom.

Character:
Students must show a positive character as seen through positive recommendations and clean discipline.  Character is evaluated through letters of recommendations and Faculty input.  Discipline and removal for Character is not limited to plagiarism,  cheating, suspensions and breaking laws in the school and community.

Service:
Service through actions outside of events and organizations categorized in the previous pillars.  Eligible service cannot be used as service requirements for any other organization (ex: Student Council, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts or course requirements).

Recommendation forms

Two Recommendation letters are required for each application (One Service and One Leadership). Please click on the recommendation letter request for the form to give prospective recommenders.

Information evaluation

All student information packets (commonly called applications) must be completed and turned in by the specified deadline each year.  They will be reviewed by a five person faculty council.  Information packets will be reviewed by the faculty council to evaluate if each individual meets eligibility in the four pillars:  Leadership, Character, Service and Academics (Academic eligibility is 92% cumulative GPA or higher).  Faculty Council Reviewers will look at information packets, letters of recommendation and Faculty input forms  to evaluate Leadership, Character and Service.  Essays are valuable resources to relay character, leadership and service information to evaluators.  All applicants are strongly encouraged to attend an application information session for valuable tips and deadlines.
