Wattsburg Area School District has a district- wide teacher of the Gifted, who provides enrichment and enhancement to the regular education curriculum to students who identified as gifted. The Discovery Program is a pull-out enhancement and enrichment program for students who are gifted in grade 2-8th. The teacher of the gifted develops units that are designed to facilitate the problem-solving and critical thinking skills of the students. The students participate in a variety of units throughout the school year where the students work individually and collaboratively with each other on challenging and engaging activities. Teachers can recommend students in kindergarten through 8th grade to participate in an enrichment program. Enrichment lessons are designed to develop talents in all children, providing a broad range of advanced-level enrichment experiences and providing advanced follow-up opportunities for young people based on their strengths and interests. The focus of enrichment is to use highly engaging, enjoyable and challenging learning experiences that are constructed around students' interests, learning styles, and preferred modes of expression.
In the high school, students who are gifted have a variety of opportunities to enhance and enrich their learning experience. Students can take course that are at the Honors Level and Advanced Placement (AP) courses. Students taking AP courses have the opportunity to take an AP test that can lead to the student earning college credit for the course. Students have the choice to enroll in college courses through the Regional Choice Initiative (RCI) or through a Dual Enrollment program, where the students can take college level courses with professors from the local universities and earn college credits for the courses they complete. High school students also have the opportunity to job shadow a professional in our community. Job shadowing can provide a learning experience in career and leadership development.
