Class Info

Welcome to the 2nd grade. I look forward to an exciting year.  Feel free to contact me at school by calling or emailing.  The school’s number is 824-3400 and my extension is 6684 or you can reach me by email at [email protected].  The best way to contact me is by email, and I check it before and after school.

Specials this year will be the same time each day from 10:30 to 11:25 and we have Music on Day 1, Steam/Computers on Day 2, Library on Day 3, Phys. Ed. on Day 4 and Art on Day 5.  Since we have lunch at 12:32, many students need a snack to get them through the morning.  With your help I’d like to provide our students with an morning snack.  I will bring snack for the first week.  After that I’m asking for your help to send in a snack for just your own child.  This is not a requirement, but we will take a few minutes in the morning for the students to eat their snack if they have one.

Your child will bring home a Homework Folder each night.  It will hold any homework, letters from the office, or corrected papers to keep.  Please check it each day.  Every Monday I send home a weekly Homework Calendar.  It will have the homework assignments, spelling words, important announcements, and skills we’ll be working on for the week.  It can also be viewed by clicking on the link below titled "Homework Calendar".

I encourage parents to come in to help out with the class.  If you’re interested in helping out with lessons, taking reading groups, reading to the class, or just lending a hand, please let me know.

NPN Cards!

My students are encouraged to enter NPN card contests.  NPN stands for No Purchase Necessary.  When you purchase a pack of cards at a store, you will fine small print on the back of the package.  This small print gives you the odds of finding an autograph, piece of a player jersey or other valuable card.  The odds are pretty slim.  This is considered a lottery, and consequently card companies must provide the public a way to win a card without buying a pack.  Within the small print you'll find an address to mail a free entry.  All you need to do is print your name and address on a 3x5 note card, send it in a #10 envelope to the address given by the card company, and make sure the letter arrives before the deadline.  I do not know how the card companies pick the winners.  Our students are encouraged to enter these NPN offers.  It gives them practice addressing an envelope but more importantly helps them memorize their home address.  See below for some of the cards our students have won over the last couple years.

Johnny Appleseed

Johnny Appleseed Our students learned about the tall tales of Johnny Appleseed, whose real name was John Chapman.  The students found out about the life of the real Johnny Appleseed and then created a map of the states he traveled through.
Our students wrote to athletes, musicians or actors for autographs or a company for samples or promotional materials. Here are the results.

Water Tension Experiment

How many drops of water can you fit on a penny?  Students then used nickels.  Some students were creative and found other objects to experiment with.

Water and Oil Don't Mix

Students took water and added food coloring.  They observed how the two liquids mixed together.  Oil was then added, and the students then observed how the water and oil would not combine to make a new mixture.  They tried several different ways to mix them without any luck.
