Welcome to the Wattsburg Area School District Website

Message from the Superintendent

Welcome to the web-site of the Wattsburg Area School District. I am proud to announce that the district as a whole made AYP for the 2010-2011 school year as measured by the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment. Our challenges will continue as the state proficiency levels for the 2011- 2012 school year increase to 78% in Mathematics and 81% in Reading. Despite the fact that we face difficult economic times educationally, the demands of our state and federal mandates have not decreased. Our most valuable asset continues to be the expertise of our teachers and the staff that supports their efforts on behalf of our children. We will continue to promote the professional development of our teachers through providing them with a strong foundation for implementing RTII (Response to Intervention and Instruction), sharing expertise on standardizing our guided reading practice, implementing the SAS training that we have received in the area of mathematics, and continuing our initiatives to improve reading and writing across content areas.
This school year we will again provide teachers with time to collaborate in order to share teaching practices and further refine curricula. Presently we are using the Curriculum Connector database in order to map curriculum for each grade level and content area and to check the vertical and horizontal alignment of curriculum K-12. We are also ensuring that our mapped curriculum aligns with the Standards Aligned System developed by the state of Pennsylvania. We have also provided training on the use of Performance Tracker software so that our educators can more effectively analyze the achievement data of our students and create individual profiles for them as they move from grade level to grade level.
We have many teachers who are adept at the Understanding by Design Framework endorsed by Wiggins and McTighe and have developed a cadre of teachers who are familiar with the instructional strategies of the Pennsylvania Literacy Framework. Our administrators have set a goal to visit our classrooms on a regular basis to see these instructional strategies in play.
We hope that you will visit our web-site often to stay current on the many positive events that are occurring in the Wattsburg Area Elementary Center, Wattsburg Area Middle School, and Seneca High School. We are here to serve your children and help them to achieve their full academic potential, so do not hesitate to contact us with questions or concerns about your child’s school experience. Contact information for all of our administrators and supervisors is provided on our web-site.
