Welcome to 8th grade English Language Arts.  I am looking forward to a wonderful school year.  I’ve had the opportunity to discuss with students the expectations for 8th grade ELA, and encourage you to talk with your child to guarantee both parents and students are aware of the rules, expectations, and responsibilities to ensure a successful school year.

As a teacher, I understand the importance of the school experience for every student and my role as a teacher and model.  Therefore, I promise to teach the necessary concepts to your child, try to be aware of the needs of your child, and communicate with you regarding your child’s progress.

As a student, you must understand the importance of your education.  It will help you become a better person.  Your parents will be there to help you, but ultimately, you are the one who has to do the work.  Therefore, in order to be successful, you must return completed homework on time, report to school on time and ready to work (unless you’re sick), follow school rules and be responsible for your own behavior, and pay attention/ask for help when needed.

And finally, to the parents.  You play a vital role in your child’s growth and success.  Your participation in your child’s education will help him/her achievement and attitude.  We ask that you ensure that your child has a quiet place to study, encourage him/her to complete homework, make sure your child gets to school on time and is ready to learn, and attend Open House/Parent Conferences and keep lines of communication open.

 Remind App

=        The Remind App is a great way for students, parents, and teacher to keep in contact.  This app is a way to text/message outside of school without contact information given.  We will use it to communicate homework, reminders for due dates and other important information.  This can be done through a smart phone or simply online.

Rules and Expectations

Students are expected to “REACH” for success in my classroom.
 

RESPECT: Students are expected to treat others how they would like to be treated. 

Profane, racist, or inappropriate language, negative or disrespectful comments will

not be tolerated. Be considerate of other students, teachers and adults at WAMS.

This also includes respecting the classroom.  Students are expected to take care of

their area in the classroom.  Do not write on desks and keep the classroom clean. 

Trashcans are provided.  Because the classroom is to be in order before dismissal,

students will remain in assigned seats until the teacher, not the clock,

dismisses the class.  

EFFORT: Students are expected to try their best each and every day.  This includes

arriving to class on time and prepared.  Students should work to complete

classroom assignments to the best of their ability during the time given. 

ATTITUDE: Come in each day with a smile and an open mind. Have an open mind

and a willing attitude.  Within the classroom, we will work together on many things

that will be new to you.  Some you will like better than others.  Complaining is a

waste of energy and uses up a lot of time that could be invested in your work. 

Do your best

  COOPERATION: Be willing to work with others.  Everyone in the class will be

learning together.  If we treat each other with a caring respect and regard, we

will not only end up learning a lot, but we will also enjoy the experience.  You

are not expected to be friends with everyone in the classroom, but you are

expected to be open minded and respectful.   

HONESTY: Honestly is the best policy.  Tell the truth.

All units will wrap up with a cummulative
assessment on all topics taught throughout
the quarter

First Quarter: The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton    
 
followed by an argumentative writing piece.

 

Second Quarter: Fever 1793 by Laurie Halse

Anderson followed by a narrative writing.

 

Third Quarter: Literature circles (student choice

of several novels) followed by a research paper.

 

Fourth Quarter: The Little Prince by Antoine De

Saint-Exupery followed by a creative writing piece.
