Wellness Interviews
Mr. Rinke
Mr. Rinke, the high school principal, pays a lot of attention to wellness in his life. In a recent interview he said, “Wellness means being physically fit, mentally with it, emotionally secure, and developing healthy habits.” Mr. Rinke promotes wellness in his life by exercising 3 to 4 times a week, avoiding tobacco and drugs, and avoiding other unhealthy habits. Being a principal is a hectic job, but Mr. Rinke still can manage to get 6 to 7 hours of sleep every night. He gets his “3 A Day of Dairy” by drinking rice milk with his cereal, having a yogurt throughout the day, and often having cheese and eggs for breakfast lunch or dinner. Mr. Rinke makes the intelligent decision to eat breakfast every morning. Breakfast is his favorite meal of the day. During the weekdays, he has fruit, yogurt, toast, juice, and cereal, but on the weekends he enjoys a big breakfast or goes out to breakfast.
Ben Stepnowski
Ben Stepnowski, a junior at Seneca and an active member of the stage crew, was interviewed about his personal wellness. Ben ’s hobbies include Stage Crew, camping, riding bikes, and hanging out with friends. When asked what wellness means to him, he replied, “wellness is being healthy.” Ben exercises everyday with gym class and does anything physical that he can with Stage crew. Other choices that Ben makes to promote wellness in his life include washing his hands before he eats and after he uses the restroom as well as eating everything on his plate. Ben goes to bed at around 10 pm and wakes up at 6 am, which gives him eight hours of sleep every night. Unlike many teens, Ben eats a breakfast every morning which consists of a glass of juice and a toaster strudel or a breakfast bar. His favorite food is anything with pasta. Being a teenager is stressful, but Ben usually doesn’t get stressed, he tries to maintain his wellness by allowing the negative things to “go in one ear and out the other.”
Wellness is not just for high school students or adults, Kaylee Devlin a seventh grade student at Wattsburg Area Middle School associates wellness with being active in life. She is involved with the seventh grade basketball team and exercises everyday during basketball practice or gym class. Kaylee promotes wellness in her life by washing her hands often and getting around 10 hours of sleep every night. Her favorite foods and drinks include ice cream, pizza, and soda. Kaylee sometimes gets stressed, but she unwinds and tries to relax as much as she can.
Andrew Donaldson
Andrew Donaldson a seventh grade student at WAMS decided that wellness is being healthy over a period of time. He said that they had just learned about wellness in health class and the teacher referred to it as “The climate of being healthy.” Andrew exercises three times a week during gym class. Andrew gets around 6 hours of sleep per night. He practices having good wellness in his life by not eating “junk food” all the time, and choosing water over soda most of the time. His favorite foods include beef jerky, soup (especially Ramen Noodles), and Chinese food. For drinks, he enjoys water and occasionally a Monster energy drink. He is currently not involved in any sports, but likes to play on the computer, video games, and listen to music. Andrew explained, “I don’t really do anything when I get stressed, I just let it pass.” He tries to relax, by sleeping or just lying down.
Kaitlyn Babe
Wellness is a term that is easily set aside when students are focused on extracurricular activities, and school work. Kaitlyn Babe believes wellness is being active, healthy and in shape. She is a seventh grade student who is active in sports by playing soccer, basketball, and softball. She exercises every night with basketball practice, and gym class during the week. Kaitlyn gets her "3 a day dairy" because her favorites are ice cream and milk. She gets around 10 hours of sleep every night, and wakes up in the morning to have a healthy breakfast that usually consists of cereal, toast and milk. When asked what choices she makes in her life to promote wellness, she replied, “I choose to play basketball, soccer, and softball, and I wash my hands often." Kaitlyn deals with stress by talking to her friends, and just relaxing in her bed.
Tiffany Jaraczewski
Sophomore Tiffany Jaraczewski thinks that “eating healthy, exercising, and being nutritional” is what defines wellness. When asked how much she exercises, she laughed and commented, “I’ll be honest. I don’t really exercise. But when I do, it’s for a couple hours at a time.” Like the average teenager, she only gets about 6 or 7 hours of sleep a night; but unlike most, she does start her day off with a healthy breakfast. She tries her hardest to promote wellness by eating healthy and staying active; especially in the color guard. When asked how she manages her stress, she only laughed and said, “I cry. It makes me feel better.”
